The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve is a vehicle component that emerged in the 1960s out of the need to tackle the problem of blow-by gasses generated by a vehicle’s engine. Interestingly, the introduction of the PCV valve coincided with the period in which the production of Minis began. Hence, Minis were one of those vehicles with PVC valves as a component right from the start.
The PCV valve is essential in your Mini. Without it, you will fail emissions tests because this valve removes otherwise toxic and harmful gases from the engine. Notwithstanding Mini’s reliable and sturdy design, they are still susceptible to wear and tear after a long period of use, including the PCV Valve. Hence, drivers must closely monitor their vehicle’s for any damage that might affect the PCV Valve.
Why is Your Mini’s PCV valve failing?
Some of the major factors that may cause your PCV valve failure include:
Constant Use
Like other vehicle components, the PCV valve undergoes natural wear and tear over time. Repeated usage is one of the leading causes of component damage in a vehicle, and it is almost inevitable. Every vehicle component will undergo wear and tear after an extended period of use, and the Mini’s PCV is not an exception.
Clogged Valve
This is another prevalent cause of PCV valve failure. PCV will fail if some of the engine’s by-products clog the valve. In a situation where this is the case, PCV would not perform optimally, and after an extended period, it may eventually fail.
Broken Hose
When a hose is broken or ruptured, leakages occur, and the engine can even misfire. In this case.
Internal Engine Damage
Since all vehicle components are interconnected, some components require the proper functionality of others for theirs. In the case of the PCV valve, when there is internal damage to the engine, it impacts the effectiveness of the PCV valve.
Considering that the PCV valve was created to solve an engine problem, the PCV valve requires the proper functioning of its engine to operate. A faulty engine would drive too much pressure on the PCV, thereby overworking the valve and consequently causing it to fail.
Signs that your Mini’s PVC valve is failing
When your Mini PCV valve starts failing, your vehicle overall performance is impacted. However, when your PCV valve starts failing, you may notice the following signs:
- Illuminated check engine light: When your vehicle’s dashboard displays the check engine light, it is a call for you to get your vehicle checked by an expert. The check engine light could have been activated due to other factors, including a faulty PCV valve failure. This feature is present in most modern vehicles because they have electronically controlled engines.
- Lean/rich mixtures and Engine Misfires: Another sign that you have a defective PCV valve is when your fuel/air mixture is too lean or rich. This might be difficult to detect, but this symptom’s ripple effect makes it more obvious. A fuel/air mixture that is too rich or lean can lead to engine misfires. The cylinders would not fire up correctly if the mixture is too lean, and this will cause a misfire. Also, if the mixture is too rich, a misfire can occur.
- Irregular Exhaust smoke: A very telling sign of PCV valve failure is when you notice intense white, black, or even blue smoke coming out of your vehicle exhaust pipe. At this point, you should see an expert.
